Antique Danish pine chest of drawers with locking drawers. Dates aprox 1850.
Antique Danish pine chest of drawers dating from early 1900s. 4 generous depth drawers offer lots of storage.
This functional pine chest of drawers was made as a present to a young girl for her to pack her clothes and belongings into before she traveled to take up her position as the maid in a household in the city or on a farm in the countryside.
The simple and plain appearance of the chest indicates that girl's parents did not have much money.
The drawers can all be locked as this was so the chest of drawers could be sent in advance of the girl to the location where she would be working.
That is why the address tags are found on the back and in this chest of drawers it can be seen clearly where the girl would be working.
This lovely chest of drawers has had a well travelled life as the destination labels on the back indicate. At least one destination was Vemb in the North of Denmark.
Sadly, the label with the owners name is too worn to be read.
The chest has 4 drawers all fitted with lock although I dont have the key. It would be possible to remove a lock to take it and have a key made.
The drawers all have a centrally placed handle pull.
The drawers and the whole chest has been constructed using tradtional joinery methods like dove tail joins on the drawers and panneled back and drawer bottoms.
All the drawers run smoothly and easily.
