Antique chest of drawers | solid oak | 1850s period
Unique antique solid oak chest of drawers where all the drawers lock and the key acts as drawer pull handle
This stylish oak chest of drawers was made as a present to a young girl for her to pack her clothes and belongings into before she traveled to take up her position as the maid in a household in the city or on a farm in the countryside.
The wealth of the gilrs parents can be seen by the use of solid oak for construction and brass keyhole covers as these were expensive compared to the cheaper pine option.
Uniquely the chest is constructed using ½ inch thick oak plank which has been cut and joined in book format so the 2 planks mirror each other.
The drawers can all be locked as this was so the chest of drawers could be sent in advance of the girl to the location where she would be working.
Condition: Superb with stunning patina and fully restored with all the drawers running smoothly. The oak has oiled finish which leaves it smooth and very soft to touch.
